Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte said on Thursday that he is moving to declare a state of emergency in the country and is seeking the help of Congress to fight the virus.
“The President said that he has received the report of the Joint Investigation Commission of the Philippine National Police and will issue an order to the President to declare martial law,” a Philippine Defense Ministry statement said.
Duterte said that the declaration would help control the spread of the virus and protect public health.
The joint investigation commission, which has been investigating the death of an anti-drug officer, has reported that a person in the Philippines was infected with the virus but did not die.
Duterte’s spokesman said the president was taking precautions to ensure the safety of the people of the country.
On Wednesday, Duterte signed an executive order to declare emergency and call in troops to fight against the Zika virus.
The move will also allow the government to take the necessary measures to fight it.
