Croton, Tennessee, is one of only a handful of places in the United States where you can pronounce the word “batik” in its original, syllabic form.
“We call it the Batik Johor, and I’ve been doing it for 50 years,” said Croton Mayor Doug Fogleman.
“I’ve never had to spell it in a foreign language.
We’re just getting started.”
The city’s Batik Project is a collaboration between Croton and the U.S. Department of State to encourage the international use of the batik pronunciation of “bat-ik.”
